"I have shewed
you all things, how that so labouring ye ought to support the weak, and to
remember the words of the Lord Jesus, how he said, It is more blessed to give
than to receive" (Acts 20:35).
The world always thinks of what it will
gain. They think: “What will I gain from this friendship?” What will I get from
this church at the end of service?” “Are they offering us tea and cake?” “Are
they giving out things from the ‘Help the Needy'department?”
But as
Christians, we should not think like the world. We should always think of what
we can do to help others. We should think, “What services can I
offer?”
This is why I always say there will always be givers and takers,
winners and losers.
Which are you going to be?
Jesus,
recognizing the mindset of the world, asked, “What will it profit you if you
gain the whole world and lose your soul?” (Mark 8:36). Observe that ‘the
world'is general, but ‘your soul'is specific to you. God's concern is for your
soul and not all the things you are able to acquire or achieve.
Gain is
not godliness. The fact that you're doing well financially does not mean you're
walking in the light of God's Word. Prayer, fellowship, faith, forgiveness,
spiritual growth…those are the things that make for godliness! No doubt, gain
looks great from the outward appearance but by no means does it mean
godliness.
Just as the apostle Paul said, “...to live is Christ, and to
die is gain” (Philippians 1:21), and that is the purpose of our existence: to
live for Christ and die for Him if we have to.
Everything in you must
believe this and affirm it. Begin to think like Christ and act like Him; think
what you can do for people to bless them and lift them up.
