Let us define what sin is. The word sin, 'hamartia' in ancient Greek, means to 'miss the mark.' In other words, it is to do something wrong. It is a sin to disobey God's orders. Sin is the rejection of the word of God. It is the rejection of the love of God. When we sin, we try to live without God. Sin separates us from God's love and protection.
Sin is rebellion against God.
The book of Daniel 9:9 says, "The Lord our God is merciful and forgiving, even though we have rebelled against him."
The consequences of sin are:-
1. Physical death
Physical death came in the world through Adam, to Adam and to all of us. God cursed Adam and said, “..for dust you are and to dust you will return." (Genesis 3:19)
2. Sin is to be totally deprived of the love, grace and life of God.
3. It is a total separation from God.
4. The power of Satan fills us.
5. We cannot enjoy, neither appreciate the presence of God.
6. Others are also suffering because of me. God's love is supposed to flow through me to my fellow neighbor. This is called fraternal love.
7. Sin causes sickness
Sin makes our bodies and minds weak. It makes us physically and emotionally sick. In John 5:14, Jesus said to the man who had an infirmity thirty-eight years, "See, you have been made well. Sin no more, lest a worse thing come upon you."Jesus gives us a warning to keep away from sin.
8. Sin destroys physical beauty
God asked Cain as to why had his countenance fallen? Nehemiah 2:3 says, "Therefore the king said to me, "Why is your face sad, since you are not sick? This is nothing but sorrow of heart."
9. Sin causes us to lose God's divine protection
The heavenly hedge mentioned in Job 1, is lifted up. God's hand is lifted when we sin.
10. Leads to spiritual death
When you listen to God's word, you find it boring and you cannot enjoy it. Romans 8:6-8 says, "For to be carnally minded is death, but to be spiritually minded is life and peace. Because the carnal mind is enmity against God; for it is not subject to the law of God, nor indeed can be. So then, those who are in the flesh cannot please God."
We cannot please God while living in a state of sin. "For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord." (Romans 6:23) The result of disobedience is sin and the result of sin is eternal death.
11. Prayers are not answered when we sin
John tells us that that God does not hear sinners (John 9:31)
12. sinners No success, no victory in lifeJoshua 7:1-26 talks about the sin of Achan. Achan sinned and hid sinful things, so God killed him and the site of Achan's death and grave was called, "the valley of Achor" which has become a barren desert.
The book of Galatians 5:19-21 talks about the acts of our sinful nature. "The acts of the sinful nature are obvious: sexual immorality, impurity and debauchery; idolatry and witchcraft; hatred, discord, jealousy, fits of rage, selfish ambition, dissensions, factions and envy; drunkenness, orgies, and the like.
I warn you, as I did before, that those who live like this will not inherit the kingdom of God."
1 Corinthians 6:8-10 says, "Instead, you yourselves cheat and do wrong, and you do this to your brothers. Do you not know that the wicked will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived: Neither the sexually immoral nor idolaters nor adulterers nor male prostitutes nor homosexual offenders nor thieves nor the greedy nor drunkards nor slanderers nor swindlers will inherit the kingdom of God."
The word of God declares in Romans 5:8, "But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us."
We were made sinners because of Adam's disobedience. We are now made righteous because of the sacrifice of Jesus. (Romans 5:19)
Romans 3:23-24 says, "for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, and are justified freely by his grace through the redemption that came by Christ Jesus." All have sinned. None are righteous. But, justification and forgiveness came through the sacrifice of Christ Jesus.
Let us thank God and our Lord Jesus Christ who has set us free from sin by His blood sacrifice on the cross.
